Self Improvement
A Crash Course in Self Improvement
Many people reach a point in their lives when they decide it is time for a change. For some self improvement. This
decision might be precipitated by something life changing such as divorce, the birth of a child, or the loss of a job.
The only way that self improvement works is if the individual has a clear set of goals in all parts of their life, a plan to achieve those
goals, and a willingness to see them through.
There are four categories of our lives that self improvement can influence - the financial,
spiritual, physical, and emotional.
They complement each other and can be broken down into further sub groups.
When one can synchronise these four areas of life, self improvement easily follows. It may be that
improvement is sought in only one of these areas, but looking at all aspects of life together often achieves what is looked for, but in a more
effective and more rounded way.
Financial
A person's financial position can have a great bearing on their sense of well-being. If finances are out
of control and there are debt worries, it can affect both the mind, body and spirit. Worry brings on stress,
which in turn can manifest itself in all kinds of physical ailments if not held in check; tensions can build in relationships to the point that
people break up and go their separate ways; and a person's self esteem can plummet and take with it any sense of confidence in the
future.
So, getting one's finances in order is a fundamental step towards improving anything else in your
life.
Spiritual
The spiritual side of life does not necessarily refer to religion, specific or otherwise.
Spirituality is that sense of faith we all have, from which we derive comfort, and which gives us a purpose in life, a sense of belonging and a
place in the community.
Physical
The need for physical well being is another obvious aspect of self
improvement. If you are feeling tired and listless, if you lack concentration or energy, how are you going to
make life changing improvements. Physical health is about much more than how 'fit' our bodies look on the outside, though. It is more to do
with how well the whole body functions, and our overall sense of well-being. Before contemplating any form of regular physical
exercise, especially if you are not used to it, you should visit your doctor for a check up. This will ensure there are no underlying
physical conditions that might influence the appropriateness of your proposed exercise activity.
Emotional
Emotional well being brings contentment with life, a heightened sense of self worth, and healthy
relationships, whether they be with a partner, a member of your family, a close friend or a work colleague. Any relationship that is strained
will create a hurdle for your self improvement goals, and hold them back. Unhealthy relationships and must be improved on as soon as
possible.
