Insomnia
Insomnia is a medical disorder that inhibits sleep. It can be
brought on by stress, drugs, diet and alcohol, and even by just having an overactive mind. If you're worried about something that has
happened in your life, or is about to take place, and your mind is still thinking about it at bedtime, that can cause insomnia.
Drinking too much coffee during the day and late into
the evening is another cause, because of the caffeine it contains; and alcohol, illegal drugs and some medications can all have an
impact on our ability to sleep properly as well.
Insomnia then, is caused mainly by what we consume and how we are thinking, and as such, we can do something about it. It's easy enough to
cutback on coffee drinking and alcohol consumption, but there may be some foods that don't agree with our metabolism.
Try changing your diet, see if certain foods stop you from sleeping properly. If you are taking medication which you feel may be
responsible for your insomnia, consult your doctor for further advice.
Worry, stress and anxiety can all contribute to insomnia, and with these states of mind we need to try and relax, so that our thinking settles
down when it is time to sleep. There are many relaxation methods that can be practised in order for your body to relax and let sleep take
over.
Our body's need to recharge during sleep, so we need to do what we can to control what we eat and drink and to relax, before settling down for
the night.
