Easy ways to maintain good dental health
Dental health is one of the most important areas of personal hygiene that we need to pay
attention to. Good dental hygiene will ensure that we look good, and that we don't develop conditions in our mouth
that cause gum disease, or which require cavities being drilled or teeth removed.
There are several things you can do to maintain your level of dental health.
- Have a regular mouth examination, both by checking out your mouth yourself, and by regular visits to your
dentist.
- Brush and floss your teeth at least once a
day.
-
Ensure that you use a toothpaste and mouth wash that use fluoride as an active ingredient. Fluoride has
been seen as an effective means of fighting tooth decay, and helping young children develop their
teeth properly.
-
To maintain a good level of dental health, you should limit your consumption of
snacks, drinks and other foods that are high in simple sugars. After eating sweet foods, your teeth
are subject to the harmful effects of bacteria for a period of time. You should ideally brush your teeth or
use mouth wash afterwards to reduce the bacteria present.
-
The harmful side effects that smoking causes on general health are well known, but smokers often fail to
recognise the impact smoking has on dental health. Smokers will find that their teeth become stained, which
is often difficult, sometimes impossible to remove, and that they will experience bad breath from the
cigarettes. The risk of oral cancer is also greatly enhanced, so smoking doesn't just have a bad effect on
your dental health, it can also affect your life.
No matter how well you deal with your
personal dental hygiene, problems can arise. That is why you should visit your dentist on a regular basis so
that any problems can be dealt with speedily, before they develop into something more
serious.
